DODGEVILLE, Wis. — After 97 years as a cornerstone of downtown Dodgeville, Quality Bakery has announced it will close this fall.

In a message posted to its Facebook page, the family behind the bakery shared that their final day of business will be Saturday, Oct. 4.

“After 97 wonderful years of serving this amazing community, we have made the difficult decision to close the doors of Quality Bakery,” the family wrote.

Founded in 1928 by Laverne, the great-grandfather of the current owners, the bakery has been a fixture for birthdays, holidays and daily routines. “What started as a dream generations ago by our great grandpa Laverne, has become more than just a bakery — it became a second home where we grew up, and a part of your everyday lives,” the family said.

The post explained that the decision to close came from a desire to spend more time together away from the demands of running the business. “After years of early mornings, late nights, and weekends filled with flour and frosting, we’re choosing to step away to cherish more of those moments with each other,” the statement read.

Quality Bakery also thanked the generations of customers and staff who sustained the shop. “We want to thank each and every one of you — our loyal customers, neighbors, and friends — for your support, your stories, your smiles, and your trust. Generations of our family have poured their hearts into every loaf, every cookie, and every moment spent behind the counter,” the family wrote.

The announcement invited patrons to stop in before October to share “a memory, a hug, or just a goodbye.”

No details were shared about what will happen to the bakery’s recipes or building after closing, though the family asked for patience as they take “this step with care and reflection.”

For many in Dodgeville and across Iowa County, the news marks the end of an era. Quality Bakery has been part of everyday life for nearly a century, from morning donuts to wedding cakes, and its absence will be deeply felt in the community.

Fans have only a few days to stop in and say goodbye.
