The Wisconsin Beef Council is launching its second annual Wisconsin’s Best Burger Contest, aiming to crown the state’s most delectable 100% beef burger. The contest, which begins Friday, invites burger enthusiasts to nominate their favorite beef burgers from Wisconsin restaurants, bars and grills.

Nominations open Feb. 21 and run through midnight on March 21, 2025. Participants can submit one nomination each via the council’s website, www.beeftips.com/bestburger, where restaurants can also access marketing materials to promote the contest. The council encourages customers to inform restaurant owners and managers about the competition to boost in-house promotion.

Last year’s inaugural contest ignited a statewide burger craze, with the Elite Eight finalists reporting increased sales and recognition. In early April, the council will announce this year’s top eight nominees. A panel of undercover judges will then evaluate the finalists based on taste (50 points), appearance (30 points), proper doneness (10 points) and overall enjoyment (10 points), with up to five bonus points for the dining atmosphere and experience.

The winner will be revealed May 1, kicking off May Beef Month.

To qualify, burgers must feature a 100% beef patty—spices or vegetables may be added—and be served on a bun or bread product, such as biscuits or tortillas. Condiments, sauces, cheeses and toppings are permitted, and the burger must be a regular menu item at a year-round restaurant. A restaurant can win the title only once.

The Wisconsin Beef Council reserves the right to interpret its official rules, available online, with all decisions final. Top-eight finishers, especially the champion, can expect a business boost and are encouraged to rally nominations accordingly.
