Happy Spring Primary Day!

No, not the Presidential Primary, that’s in April, which coincides with the Spring General election.

If you think that’s confusing, imagine a full week of intrigue wondering if your governor was going to sign off on a redistricting plan he, himself, proposed! (He eventually did, more on that in a bit).

Moreover, after thirteen years of Democrats bemoaning the implementation of a legislative redistricting plan drafted in secret, which passed with little public scrutiny and was a map they claim was created solely to give partisan advantage to one party over another, they are celebrating the fact that Governor Evers just signed off on a legislative redistricting plan which was drafted in secret, which passed with little public scrutiny and was a map created solely to give partisan advantage to one party over another.

Far be it from us to point out the hypocrisy!

Wisconsin Gov. signs new legislative mapsScott Bauer, Associated Press

Wisconsin Democratic Gov. Tony Evers signed new legislative district maps into law on Monday that he proposed and that the Republicans who control the Legislature passed to avoid having the liberal-controlled state Supreme Court draw the lines.

Democrats hailed the signing as a major political victory in the swing state where the Legislature has been firmly under Republican control for more than a decade, even as Democrats have won 14 of the past 17 statewide elections.

Republicans explained why they voted in favor of the Evers plan.

Wisconsin governor signs into law maps he drew, says ‘right thing to do’ Benjamin Yount, The Center Square

Today, Governor Evers signed the most Republican-leaning maps out of all the Democrat-gerrymandered maps being considered by the Wisconsin Supreme Court,” Vos said in a statement. “We sent him those maps, not because they are fair, but because the people of Wisconsin deserve certainty in state government. This legislation brings to end this sham of a litigation designed to deliver judicially gerrymandered Democrat maps to the liberal special interest groups funding said litigation. This fall Republicans will prove that we can win on any maps because we have the better policy ideas for the state of Wisconsin. We are happy that the governor’s signature brings to an end decades of liberal special interest litigation over maps in Wisconsin

–Assembly Speaker Robin Vos

If you think the redistricting war is over, think again. There is another challenge to the state’s Congressional district boundaries, and there is confusion over whether the new legislative maps go into effect earlier than November.

But like a pre-internet age family taking a detour on the way to a Florida vacation, we’ve had enough squabbling about maps for one day. Onto other Key reads…

So let’s talk about…the processing of ballots!

Effort to allow for early processing of Wisconsin absentee ballots stalls outWPR

“I think a couple members of the committee have problems with the bill,” LeMaheiu said.

The Republican-authored bill would allow municipalities to begin canvassing absentee ballots the day before an election, and require it in communities that use a central location for counting absentee ballots, like Milwaukee. Election workers would not be allowed to tally the ballots during early canvassing.

The change has been proposed by both Democrats and Republicans for years. Large cities often take longer to process the large quantity of absentee ballots they receive, sometimes leading to late-night swings in unofficial election results.

It’s a well deserved recognition and one that should boost tourism and aid employee recruitment and retention efforts. We’re first in the nation when it comes to the quality of our public golf courses.

Golf Digest ranked the best states for public golf and put Wisconsin at No. 1Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Wisconsinites probably know that their state has some gems when it comes to public golf courses. If the rest of the country didn’t know that already, it might now.

Golf Digest ranked the best states for public golf and gave Wisconsin the No. 1 ranking. The ranking is helped along by the Straits Course of Whistling Straits, which was ranked fourth among America’s 100 greatest public courses, not to mention No. 10 Erin Hills, No. 17 Sand Valley Course (at Sand Valley Golf Resort) and seven other courses in the top 100.

The ranking nudged Wisconsin just ahead of California and Michigan, which tied for second.

We don’t regularly cover the crime beat in the communities across the state. But when something merits your attention, we will highlight it, as is the case here.

Multi-county police chase on I-94, teen arrested Fox 6

Nine luxury cars were stolen from a Waukesha car dealership Sunday morning, Feb. 18, prompting a multi-county police chase.

The chase shut down southbound lanes on I-94 for more than two hours and a teenager was arrested.

Waukesha police believe an organized crime group of teenagers from the Chicago area were behind the burglary.

So, an organized criminal ring of teenagers from Chicago drove to Waukesha to steal several luxury cars. Seems like that would be a much bigger story?

After all, unlike hypocrisy in politics, multi-state organized crime rings aren’t busted every day.
