The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will host its annual Winter Free Fishing Weekend on Jan. 17 and Jan. 18. During these two days, residents and non-residents can fish most state waters without a fishing license or stamps.

The agency stated that the event “gives families, friends and newcomers an opportunity give fishing a try or introduce another to the sport.” While license requirements are waived, all other regulations remain in effect. This includes bag limits and size restrictions.

Safety remains a main concern for the department. Officials noted that “no ice is ever 100% safe” and recommend that anglers carry safety gear. Recommended items include water resistant layers, waterproof boots with traction spikes, a rescue throw rope and ice claws. For those without equipment, the department provides loaner gear at 19 sites across the state.

The fishing industry provides a large boost to the state economy. According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association, recreational boating and fishing contribute more than $8.4 billion in annual economic impact to Wisconsin. This activity supports about 35,000 jobs. Source:

Specific winter events also drive local revenue. The Department of Natural Resources reports that the annual sturgeon spearing season on the Lake Winnebago system alone generates more than $3 million for the regional economy. Source:
