Let’s look at just the raw numbers of Wisconsin residents who have served in our nation’s armed forces. Recognizing that behind each number in this tally is a person who, voluntarily or not, helped defend freedom and liberty here and across the Globe
Civil War (1861-1865):
- Wisconsin’s involvement in the Civil War was significant. The state contributed more than 91,000 soldiers to the Union Army. Approximately 12,216 Wisconsinites did not return home, a testament to the state’s substantial contribution to the Union cause.
Spanish-American War (1898):
- While exact figures can vary, Wisconsin did send troops to serve in this brief conflict. The state’s National Guard units were mustered into federal service, but specific numbers of total enlistees from Wisconsin are less documented compared to larger wars.
World War I (1914-1918):
- Wisconsin contributed around 61,000 troops to the war effort. These soldiers served in various capacities, from the front lines in France to support roles, with many enlisting in the National Guard units that were later federalized. Some even guarded German POWs here in Wisconsin
World War II (1939-1945):
- The state’s contribution to World War II was immense. More than 333,000 Wisconsinites served in the military during this global conflict. The Badger State’s industries also played a key role in supporting the war effort, with manufacturing and agriculture booming to meet the demands of wartime production.
Korean War (1950-1953):
- During the Korean War, approximately 126,000 Wisconsin residents served. This conflict saw a significant number of National Guard and reservists being called up for service from America’s Dairyland.
Vietnam War (1955-1975):
- Estimates suggest that around 120,000 Wisconsinites served in the military during the Vietnam era. This war was particularly divisive, and, tragically, many veterans returned to a mixed reception, but their service was crucial in the context of the Cold War.
Gulf War (1990-1991):
- Wisconsin sent over 9,000 troops for Operation Desert Storm, reflecting the state’s continued commitment to national defense.
Global War on Terror (2001-Present):
- Since the onset of the Global War on Terror, which includes conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, and other operations, Wisconsin has contributed approximately 30,000 service members. This number reflects the ongoing nature of these military engagements and the state’s consistent participation. Many are deployed as you read this.
Of course there are also tens of thousands of others who served in the military, with honor, but who did so at a time when there were not declared hostilities. The contributions of those Veterans are also recognized and honored.
