Wisconsin AG Kaul Joins Multiple Multistate Legal Challenges Against Trump Administration Policies
MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul announced Monday, he’s suing the Trump Administration. Again. Kaul has joined numerous multistate lawsuits challenging various policies enacted by the Trump administration. These legal actions, now totalling more than a dozen and often in collaboration with Governor Tony Evers, address concerns over federal funding cuts, agency restructurings, and policy shifts affecting public services in Wisconsin.
Federal Funding Freeze
In January 2025, Kaul and Evers joined a coalition of states suing the Trump administration over a directive from the Office of Management and Budget that paused most federal assistance and grant funding to states. Kaul stated, “The Trump administration’s freeze of vital funding…has already resulted in widespread uncertainty and confusion” and called the policy “misguided and unlawful.”
Education Policies
Kaul has also challenged the administration’s education policies, including a lawsuit against the Department of Education’s threat to withhold federal funding from agencies that do not abandon diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. He remarked, “Funding for our kids’ educations shouldn’t be put in doubt in order to advance an ideological agenda.”
Health and Human Services Restructuring
In response to the Trump administration’s restructuring of the Department of Health and Human Services, which included mass firings and program closures, Kaul, on Monday, joined a lawsuit arguing that these actions jeopardize public health services. He said, “A dangerous mix of conspiracy theories and the extreme ideology…are causing a staggering amount of damage to the extraordinarily important work of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.”
AmeriCorps Dismantling
Kaul participated in a legal challenge against the dismantling of AmeriCorps, following the administration’s decision to place a significant portion of its workforce on leave and terminate grants. He stated, “The attempt to dismantle AmeriCorps is part of a pattern from the Trump administration of disrespect toward those who serve others.”
Medical and Public Health Research Funding
Addressing the administration’s delays and terminations of NIH grants, Kaul joined a lawsuit emphasizing the impact on Wisconsin’s research institutions. He noted, “The actions of the Trump administration are sabotaging medical and public health research.”
Election Policies
Kaul has also opposed executive orders related to election processes, including one that would end birthright citizenship. He and Evers described such actions as “unconstitutional.”
