GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Green Bay Packers selected Texas wide receiver Matthew Golden with the 23rd overall pick in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft on Thursday, marking their first first-round receiver selection since Javon Walker in 2002. The announcement, made at the NFL Draft Theater near Lambeau Field, drew cheers from thousands of Packers fans in attendance.
Golden, a 5-foot-11, 191-pound speedster, emerged as a standout for the Texas Longhorns in 2024 after transferring from Houston. He led Texas with 58 receptions, 987 yards, and nine touchdowns, averaging 17.0 yards per catch. His postseason performances, including two 100-yard games, highlighted his ability to dominate defenses. At the NFL Scouting Combine, Golden ran a 4.29-second 40-yard dash, the fastest among receivers, cementing his status as a first-round prospect.
The Packers, hosting the draft in Green Bay’s Titletown District, addressed a critical need at wide receiver. Injuries to Christian Watson, who suffered an ACL tear, and inconsistencies from Romeo Doubs and Jayden Reed underscored the need for a dynamic playmaker. Golden’s elite speed, precise route-running, and versatility across receiver positions make him a fit for Green Bay’s passing game, led by quarterback Jordan Love.
Golden’s college career began at Houston, where he recorded 13 touchdown catches over two seasons but had under 600 receiving yards each season. His breakout 2024 season at Texas, particularly in high-stakes games like the SEC Championship against Georgia, elevated his draft stock. Analysts noted his ability to create separation, track deep balls, and compete in contested-catch situations, with an 83.3% contested catch rate in 2024.

Despite his upside, Golden’s smaller frame and modest production before 2024 raised questions. Critics say his blocking, while willing, lacks strength, and occasional focus drops were noted. Some analysts debated whether his late breakout warranted a first-round selection, but his speed and potential as a deep threat aligned with the Packers’ needs.
The Packers showed strong pre-draft interest, hosting Golden for a visit and sending general manager Brian Gutekunst and vice president Jon-Eric Sullivan to Texas’ pro day. Golden is expected to compete for a No. 2 or No. 3 receiver role in 2025, complementing Reed and Doubs, while perhaps contributing as a punt or kickoff returner, having scored two return touchdowns at Houston in 2023.
The first round of the 2025 NFL Draft drew an estimated 125,000 fans to Green Bay, whose population tops out at 107,000. The NFL cut off admittance before 6:30pm.
