The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites the public to head outdoors for the 12th annual Free Fun Weekend happening June 1-2, 2024. State Park admission fees, fishing licenses and trail passes are waived for all visitors.

With 50 state parks, 15 state forests, 44 state trails, 84,000 miles of rivers and streams and roughly 15,000 lakes, Wisconsin has a little something for everyone to enjoy.

“Free Fun Weekend is always an exciting opportunity for DNR property teams to welcome new and returning visitors,” said Steve Schmelzer, DNR Bureau Director of Parks and Recreation Management. “If you’ve never visited a state park, forest, trail or recreation area, this is the perfect opportunity to explore the outdoors in our state.”

Free Fun Weekend is also an opportunity to try fishing for food or fun before purchasing an annual fishing license.

“This is a great chance to try fishing or catch a meal,” said Justine Hasz, DNR Bureau Director of Fisheries Management. “Even if you don’t have any fishing gear, you can still get involved. The DNR has tackle loaner sites across the state and hosts events to help you make the most of Wisconsin’s waters.”

Free fishing clinics are held during Free Fun Weekend at state and municipal properties to instruct beginning anglers. Visit the DNR’s Events Calendar and Wisconsin State Parks webpage for a list of events and more information on state properties.

Up in smoke: Workers remove dozens of apparent marijuana plants from Wisconsin Capitol tulip garden | Associated Press

Someone’s plans to harvest dozens of apparent marijuana plants grown on the Wisconsin state Capitol grounds have gone up in smoke.

The plants sprouted in a tulip garden outside the Capitol, WMTV-TV reported Thursday.

Tatyana Warrick, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Administration, told The Associated Press in an email Friday that workers had removed the plants, but that her agency couldn’t determine if they were marijuana or hemp. Both are forms of cannabis, but only marijuana has the compound that gets people high.

Warrick didn’t respond to questions about how the plants might have made it into the garden.

We hate Non-Sunday NFL games. We especially loathe the move to Friday games. Fridays are for high school athletes. The NFL is doing their fanbase and their future stars a disservice by playing games during the week.

Packers vs. Eagles NFL opener creates issues for Wisconsin HS games | USA Today

The NFL schedule release has created excitement for fans across the country and even the world, a progression that continues to highlight the league’s dominance. However, some of the expansion has introduced a bit of detailed torment for high school football in northern Wisconsin.

It begins with history in South America.

Green Bay’s 2024 opener is on September 6 against the Philadelphia Eagles in Sao Paola, Brazil…

It’s also on a Friday, when the bright lights of high school football have historically shined without the NFL causing any scheduling dilemmas for the fans—both in the stands and on the field…

According to a report from USA TODAY Network’s Green Bay Press Gazette, a few games—Pulaski vs. De Pere and Bay Port vs. Preble—have already moved to Thursday, while others have made earlier kickoff times.

The week ahead may have more smoke from Canadian wildfires, more emerging cicadas and more severe storms throughout the state. As always, we’ll help you sift through the noise.

Make the most of your Monday.
