We are on the backside of May with Summer in our sights, but the Key Reads today evokes the brisk feeling of a wonderful fall day.

Let’s Lambeau Leap right into it.

The NFL released the schedule for the upcoming season last night. In addition to kicking off the season on Friday, Sept 6 against the Eagles in Brazil, the Packers will host the 49ers at 3:25 on the opening weekend of the Gun Deer Hunting season, and then host a Thanksgiving evening game against the Miami Dolphins only four days later.

There is no way this is going to work out. We can’t believe UW-Green Bay will allow this to happen.

Green Bay’s Doug Gottlieb believes he can balance his new coaching job with his national radio show | Associated Press

Doug Gottlieb believes he can effectively balance coaching Green Bay and hosting a national sports radio show.

Gottlieb discussed his new arrangement during his introductory news conference Wednesday as the longtime broadcaster moves into the coaching ranks.

“In terms of the mental gymnastics of doing it, I know I can do it,” Gottlieb said. “I just have to prove I can do it.”

Gottlieb is taking over for Sundance Wicks, who left Green Bay after one year to take over Wyoming’s program. Green Bay went 18-14 in Wicks’ lone season after posting a 3-29 record the year before his arrival.

The challenge for Gottlieb is to build on Wicks’ success while dealing with the time demands that come from his radio job.

Wisconsin sure has some real winners in the legislature. One guy is so anti-cop he thinks law enforcement officers want to shoot people.

Leader LeMahieu Condemns Chris Larson’s Vile Anti-Police Rhetoric | Dairyland Sentinel

Tuesday during Senate floor debate, Senator Chris Larson accused Wisconsin police officers of “thinking it is a sport to shoot at our neighbors.” He went on to say that if Senate Bill 517 became law, Wisconsin police officers would kill “with disregard and glee.”

Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu issued the following remarks in response.

“Police officers across the state of Wisconsin put their lives on the line every day to ensure our safety. Senator Larson’s reprehensible floor speech is insulting to them and their families.

“I hope that Senate Democrats join me in condemning Senator Larson’s radical liberal comments and assure police officers across the state that their Democrat elected officials don’t believe they are ‘gleeful killers.’”

Senator LeMahieu also wrote a letter calling on Senate Minority Leader Diane Hesselbein to condemn Senator Larson’s comments.

Wisconsin high school runner fights ineligibility decision over where his parents live | CBS News

The senior at Campbellsport High School is a top running talent—one of the fastest in the state of Wisconsin—and he loves doing it….

But that peace of mind he gets while out on the track is getting messy due to a technicality. Because he is not living with his parents, he is ineligible to run for his school.

Onwunili ran for his team his freshman year, then moved to Ghana, in West Africa, where his parents serve as missionaries. He returned for his senior year, and he has a 3.7 GPA.

But he is ineligible to run.

“I don’t know what other documents they need, but we’ve given them everything we possibly can,” said Onwunili.

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association rulebook says: “A full-time student… is ineligible for varsity interscholastic competition only at the school within whose attendance boundaries his/her parents reside.”

Despite Onwunili’s parents still owning a house in the district, and living with his aunt and uncle, Onwunili said he has been sidelined.

“The purpose of the rule isn’t applicable here, right?” said Campbellsport High School track coach Derek Toshner. “They wanted to prevent the stacking of teams. That’s not the case. This kid grew up here.”

We realize we were a bit heavy on sports in today’s installment. But, that’s the way the real world works. For most of us, it’s not all politics, all the time.

Lawmakers would be smart to realize that…
