What started in 1947 as a simple roadside cheese stand on the highway between Milwaukee and Chicago eventually grew into a full-fledged highway phenomenon. In 1987, the owners leaned all the way into the name, rebuilding the Kenosha shop into a literal Bavarian-style fortress complete with ramparts, towers, and a grand entrance right off Interstate 94.
Inside, the counter staff cut blocks to order from an inventory that leans heavily on local dairies—ranging from five-year aged cheddars and squeaky fresh curds to gouda and specialty loaves. The surrounding aisles stock cured summer sausages, Wisconsin craft beers, hand-dipped chocolates, and preserves. Over seven decades in, it remains a mandatory pit stop for I-94 commuters and Great Lakes road-trippers stocking up on regional staples.
