An absolute banger of a weekend across the state, even as temps and humidity began to climb. Welcome to Monday, where most of Wisconsin will be downright sweltering as we get back to the daily grind. There are several heat advisories across much of the state.

We are especially appreciative of the construction crews, firefighters and others who have to work outside in these steamy conditions. Thank you, and hang in there.

As we look around the state for the news you need, it is evident that we are in the news lull between the political conventions and Labor Day. So, if you were checked out all weekend, you didn’t miss much. But we do have a potpourri of news items, to keep you up to speed as the work week begins.

We’ve been saying for months that the town needed State and Federal intervention to settle this mess. So far, neither is stepping up.

Town of Lac du Flambeau asks state, federal government to foot the bill in roads dispute | WPR

In January 2023, the tribe blocked four roads crossing tribal lands after negotiations failed between the tribe, the town of Lac du Flambeau and title companies after easements on them expired a decade ago. Tribal officials agreed to reopen the roads in March that same year, but for a fee that’s been climbing each month.

The tribe first sought $20 million in damages for what it said was trespassing by the town. Since then, tribal leaders have asked for roughly half that amount, and they want to grant annual leases in exchange for a fee equal to 1.5 percent of the fair market value of homes along those roads.

Town officials said earlier this month they can’t afford to pay for permits to keep the roads open.

With 2 property tax hikes on Madison ballots, city leaders add another | The Cap Times

After months of weighing options to fill an anticipated budget gap next year — such as cutting to city staff and services or adopting Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway’s plan to raise taxes — alders voted in favor of the latter in a 17-2 vote.

Approving the $22 million referendum would raise property taxes on the average Madison home by about $230 annually, according to city officials…

The November election will be historic, marking the first time Madison voters will be asked to consider property tax referendums from both the Madison school district and the city. Madison school district leaders will ask voters to approve over $600 million through two referendums, estimating the measures would bump the average homeowners’ property taxes by over $1,000 in a few years.

Takeaways from AP’s report on federal policies shielding information about potential dam failures | The Associated Press

Thousands of people live downstream from dams yet may not always realize the risks.

…heavy rains from intense storms have put communities at greater jeopardy from flooding and placed the nation’s aging dams at greater risk of failing. That’s been evident recently as floodwaters from storms damaged or breached dams in Georgia, Minnesota, New York, South Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin, forcing evacuations and costly repairs.

An Associated Press review found that conflicting federal policies may be inhibiting the ability of local officials to share details with residents, businesses and other property owners about the places that get could inundated with floodwaters if a dam were to fail
