The history of the Eagle River Snowmobile Derby dates back more than half a century. It all began when a group of snowmobile enthusiasts in Eagle River recognized the potential for organizing a large-scale snowmobile race in their area.

J.C. Pittelman, a local snowmobile dealer, came up with the idea of creating an event that would bring together passionate snowmobile racers from various parts of the country. With the support of the local community, Pittelman organized the first-ever iteration of what would later become the Eagle River Snowmobile Derby.

The inaugural race, held in February 1964, brought together around 40 racers who churned up the frozen surface of Eagle River’s Lake St. Catherine. The track was simple, consisting of a straight run with no turns. Despite the simplicity of the design, the event was a major success, attracting a considerable crowd of spectators.

It was clear they were on to something.

As the years went by, the event continued to gain momentum and popularity within the snowmobiling community. The organizers recognized the need for a dedicated racetrack to provide a more challenging and professional race experience. In 1970, construction began on the Eagle River Derby Track, a fully-contained, half-mile oval track in the heart of the community. Completed in 1971, the new facility became the permanent home of the Derby.

Over time, the Snowmobile Derby started to garner attention beyond state lines, capturing the interest of racers and fans from across the United States and Canada. The event’s reputation grew, earning it the nickname “the Indianapolis 500 of Snowmobile Racing.”

The Derby became a place for talented racers to showcase their skills and for manufacturers to unveil cutting-edge snowmobile models.

Throughout its history, the Derby has witnessed remarkable moments and achievements. Racers have shattered speed records, thrilled the crowd with daring maneuvers, and showcased the advancements in snowmobile technology. The event has also faced challenges, including changes in race formats, evolving safety regulations, and the need to adapt to shifting industry trends.

Today, the Eagle River Snowmobile Derby continues to be one of the most prestigious and eagerly anticipated snowmobile racing events in the world. It attracts thousands of fans each year, who flock to Eagle River to experience the thrilling races, vibrant atmosphere, and deep-rooted camaraderie that permeates the event.

As the Derby moves forward, it remains a testament to the passion, dedication, and pioneering spirit of the snowmobiling community. It is a testament to the vision of its founders and the ongoing support of the local community that has nurtured its growth and success throughout the years. With each passing race, the history of the Eagle River Snowmobile Derby continues to unfold, leaving an indelible mark on snowmobiling history.
