Democrat leads by about 218 ,000 votes in unofficial returns, flipping Brown, Winnebago, Kenosha and Racine counties

David Crowley will be Wisconsin’s next governor.

The Democrat and Milwaukee County executive beat Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany on Tuesday. With 71 of 72 counties reporting, Crowley had 1,430,799 votes, or 54.1%, to Tiffany’s 1,212,872, or 45.8%, in unofficial returns. That’s a lead of 217,927 votes, or 8.2 percentage points.

As results poured in and were analyzed, Dairyland Sentinel projected Crowley would be the winner at 9:28 pm. Tiffany conceded in a speech at about twenty minutes later.

“I want to congratulate David Crowley on his victory,” Tiffany said to a crowd of supporters in Wausau. “While we have our differences, we both love this great state and I wish him and his family the very best as he prepares to serve as Wisconsin’s next governor.” Tiffany said.

“Wisconsin isn’t a red state or a blue state,” he said in his victory speech to campaign supporters in Milwaukee a short time later. “We never have been. In a state this close, nobody gets to govern alone.”

Four years ago, Gov. Tony Evers beat Republican Tim Michels by 90,239 votes, 51.1% to 47.8%.

Crowley flipped four counties Michels carried in 2022: Brown, Winnebago, Kenosha and Racine.

The count isn’t done. So far 2, 643,671 votes have been tallied,Taylor is still out, Milwaukee County is still taking in absentee ballots and several counties have only part of their vote in.

WOW counties

Waukesha, Ozaukee and Washington counties went for Tiffany, but by less than the GOP nominees in the past two decades. Four years ago, the Republicans won the three by a combined 79,422 votes and 60.9% of the vote. Tiffany leads them by 59,342 with 58.6%.

BOW counties

A shift here from four years ago when the Democrats lost Brown, Outagamie and Winnebago counties by a combined 11,858 votes in 2022. Crowley leads the three by 5,597.

  • Brown: Tiffany 55,947 (48.8%), Crowley 58,410 (51.0%)
  • Outagamie: Tiffany 42,986 (50.3%), Crowley 42,426 (49.7%
  • Winnebago: Tiffany 34,365 (47.3%), Crowley 38,059 (52.4%)

Dane and Milwaukee Dominate Again

  • Dane: Crowley 250,376 (80.3%), Tiffany 60,840 (19.5%). Crowley’s margin is 189,536, up from Evers’ 174,277 four years ago. Total votes are up 10,763 from 2022.
  • Milwaukee: Crowley 271,129 (76%), Tiffany 85,633 (24%). Crowley’s margin is 185,496. Evers won the county by 148,602 four years ago.

Central Wisconsin Strong but Not strong enough

Republicans won Marathon, Wood, Waupaca and Waushara counties by a combined 26,580 votes in 2022 with 59.6% of the vote. Tiffany leads them by 22,341 with some counties still awaiting results from towns and municipalities.
